I bought this because it fit a pretty narrow set of parameters I had for a scope to put atop a bolt action .22 that is intended to be a low-light varmint gun. when turning the illumination dial, at certain points in the settings, the illumination gets ridiculously bright, like something is shorting out. It's not a deal-breaker, because you can get it to go away by moving that adjustment dial a bit, but it's definitely not operating as it should. i called the company, and after waiting on hold for like half an hour, they said they would repair or replace it, and it would take 6-8 weeks. so, since i didn't feel like paying to ship it back myself, and waiting that long for it to be returned, i decided to live with it. if it was from a better brand name, i'd be furious, but you 'get what you pay for' with cheap-ish...Read more

I know that this scope was designed & is marketed as a deer/turkey hunting scope, and it would work well for those purposes (it would also make a dandy hog hunting scope!), but in addition to that it makes a pretty good tactical scope for mounting on an M4 style carbine as well. Its 1.5-4.5x power range, illuminated circle/dot reticle and its easily adjustable, locking, tactical-style turrets make it very well suited for use on the 5.56mm/.223 caliber AR carbines that are so popular today! Is it perfect? No. The illumination could be a bit brighter, although it works just fine for use in low light where you really need an illuminated reticle. (It wasn't exactly designed for high-speed use in broad daylight. It is a hunting scope after all.) But you're not likely to find a better scope for your AR carbine at this price point. I got one as a Christmas present for my dad, and he likes it a lot!
