Product Review

The Pentax DCF CS line of binoculars are available in 8x42 and 10x42 magnifications. They are waterproof and nitrogen-filled (JIS Class 6) to handle the most extreme weather conditions (submersible to 1m). Phase coated roof prisms provide high resolution, high contrast images. Silver-deposited roof prisms reflect more light through the prism for a brighter image. Fully-multi-coated optics provide the maximum light transmission and reduced internal reflections. Inner-focus optical design allows improved sealing and improves balance. Fiber-reinforced polycarbonate for strength and rigidity. Full rubber housing protects the binoculars from shock and makes them easier to hold. Center diopter ring with click stops is easy to access and holds the adjustment firmly. Long eye relief for comfortable viewing with or without glasses. Helicoid eyepieces with four click stops allow you to properly set the eye relief. Compact size 5.6” and 5.8” for maximum comfort in field use.

These Pentax binoculars cost me less than half what I paid for the Zeiss binoculars (which I returned), yet provide better quality, better optics and a more rugged "feel". The Zeiss binoculars, however, look nicer, are much more compact and are much lighter than the Pentax, oh....., the Zeiss came with a very nice leather case.
Conclusions:
Pentax pro: more rugged body, better and sharper optics, it's water resistant, and a very good value.
Pentax Con: Heavy, much larger.
Considering all of the above, I am glad I returned the Zeiss and kept the Pentax binoculars.

These binoculars are definitely a step up from the cheaper ones I used to buy. I have worked my way up from discount-store cheapies to sub-mid-range (sub-$100), to these, which I bought based on a recommendation in Field and Stream magazine. The clarity and construction quality compared to previous binoculars I have owned is noticeable.

The Pentax warranty is a little odd, in that you pay a shipping and handling fee and send them back, so you are always out money, even if the defect occurs early in the life of the binoculars. The good news is that it is a lifetime warranty and covers damage incurred by the owner (other than purely cosmetic damage, theft, or loss), so I think it's probably a pretty good tradeoff.

I have read that a good pair of binoculars has to cost $500 or more, but these are good enough for what I do with them (camping, hunting, sports, etc.).

These binocs are nice, light, and bright...easy to focus and very sharp. Got 'em in just a few days with free shipping. It's hard to tell the difference between these and $1000 8 x 42s...............woody
